CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry

The Pacific College Sydney Entry Requirements:

1. Completion of Year 12, Higher Secondary Certificate, or an equivalent qualification
2. Age Requirement: Must be 18 years or above at the time of enrolment
3. English Language Requirement: Academic IELTS 6.0 overall, with no band less than 5.5, or
   Upper-Intermediate level English, or Successful completion of an EAP course from an approved ELICOS/ESL centre, or evidence of completing a VET course at Certificate IV or above level in Australia.
4. Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN): Students who do not meet the English language requirements above will be required to complete an LLN Test before enrolment

To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in:

• 34 units of competency:
  • 27 core units
  • 7 electives
• A minimum of five units must be selected from Group A
• The remaining can be selected from Group A or Group B
• A maximum of two units can be selected from any group or current training package, as long as it contributes to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome and maintain the AQF level of this qualification.

At Pacific College Sydney, you can apply for course credit. This uses your past skills and experience. You can use credit transfer or recognition of prior learning (RPL).

You will get a written notice about:

• Your application result.
• Any changes to the fee or duration.

If credit is approved after your CoE is issued, you will get a new CoE. It will show the updated course duration.

By the end of this course, you'll have a strong set of practical carpentry skills. You'll be ready to handle key tasks on a building site with confidence.

• Read Plans and Take Measurements: Learn to understand building plans and do accurate measurements and calculations—the essential first step for any project.
• Handle Tools and Materials Safely: Become proficient in using hand and power tools, and learn how to correctly select, prepare, and store construction materials.
• Construct Floor, Wall, and Roof Frames: Get hands-on experience in building the basic structure of a house, from the floor frame up to the roof frame.
• Install Windows, Doors, and Linings: Learn how to correctly fit and install windows, external doors, and internal linings like architraves and skirting boards.
• Apply Safety on Site: Understand and apply all critical Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements to keep yourself and others safe.
• Work Effectively in a Team: Develop the communication and teamwork skills needed to succeed in the construction industry.

When you graduate, you receive a formal qualification, the CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry. It is government-recognised, a part of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

Your Certificate III in Carpentry is the launchpad for your future in the building industry. 

Here’s how your learning journey can progress:

• Start Your Career: This certificate is the key requirement to begin a formal Carpentry Apprenticeship. It gives you a huge head start, making you a more skilled and valuable apprentice from day one.
• Become Fully Qualified: After completing your apprenticeship and gaining on-site experience, you can apply for your full Carpenter’s License or Builder’s License, allowing you to run your own projects and business.
• Specialise Further: Use this course as a base to move into specialist areas like:
  • Shopfitting and Joinery
  • Formwork (for concrete structures)
  • Estimating or Site Supervision
• Continue Your Studies: Later on, you can pursue higher qualifications like a Certificate IV in Building and Construction or a Diploma.
• Pathway to University: For some students, this trade qualification can also create a pathway into university degrees in areas like Construction Management.

Assessments are based on real workplace situations that meet industry standards to give you practical job skills. All tasks are done in a simulated work environment to assess hands-on competencies, collaboration, and the ability to manage time effectively.

Assessment Arrangements

A range of methods will be used for assessment, such as role-play-based projects, presentations, reports, portfolios, case studies, and short answers. All assessments will be carried out under conditions that simulate a real workplace.

Assessment tasks:

• Resemble actual job responsibilities.
• Must be completed within industry-standard time limits, as indicated by assessors per task.
• Are graded according to criteria that reflect the quality standards of the industry.
• Adhere to applicable industry safety regulations.
• Make use of genuine workplace documents.
• Involve teamwork and collaboration.
• Demand planning and prioritisation of multiple tasks.
• Involve standard workplace tools, including computers and software.
• Require consideration of real-world limitations such as timeframes and budgets.

Assessment Materials

Materials provided include:

• Students are provided with clear instructions, templates, and resources for each assessment task. It includes an assessment plan for tracking due dates and a cover sheet to be submitted with each task.
• Supporting Documents include templates, policies, and procedures you need for simulated workplace tasks. Details are in the student and assessor guides.

Re-assessment

Re-assessment criteria:

Students who do not meet competency requirements on an assessment have the opportunity to reassess. The re-assessment process and criteria are provided in advance.

Assessment Appeals

Students may appeal assessment outcomes if they believe the assessment was not conducted fairly. The college has a formal process for reviewing and resolving appeals in accordance with regulatory standards.
