You’re not 18 anymore. Or maybe you are, and university feels like four years and $50,000 you’re not sure you want to spend. Either way, you’re wondering whether a trade certificate or diploma could get you where you want to go faster, cheaper, and with your hands on real work sooner.
That’s a fair question. And it deserves a straight answer.
What VET Actually Is
Vocational Education and Training (VET) sits under the Australian Qualifications Framework, but it operates very differently.
Where a bachelor’s degree is built around theory, VET is built around competency. You’re assessed on whether you can do something, not just whether you understand the concept behind it.
Courses run through TAFE institutes, registered training organisations (RTOs), and some secondary schools under the School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) program. Qualifications range from Certificate I through to Vocational Graduate Diplomas at AQF Level 8, which is more range than most people realise.

Both nursing pathways can lead to jobs in hospitals and aged care.
The university route gives you more earning potential and responsibility in the long run, while the Enrolled Nurse route lets you start working, earning, and gaining real experience much earlier.
Trades flip the equation completely instead of paying to study, you get paid to learn.
Tip on Funding You Might Be Missing

Pro tip: Always check the full list of eligible courses at Federal education guidelines before enrolling. Not every course qualifies, many people miss out simply because they didn’t check first.
Which Careers Actually Require VET, Not Just Accept It
Some industries must require VET qualifications. Construction work in Australia mandates a White Card (General Construction Induction Training, delivered through RTOs). You cannot legally step onto a worksite without it.
From 2023, under the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission’s requirements, workers must hold or be working toward a Certificate III in Individual Support or equivalent. A university degree won’t substitute the specific VET credential is what unlocks the role.
Childcare works the same way. To work as an educator in a regulated early childhood service, you need at minimum a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
If your target career sits in one of these regulated areas, VET isn’t an alternative, it’s the gateway.
The Dodgy RTO Problem Hurting Real Students
Since 2024, ASQA has cancelled the registration of multiple providers operating in NSW, leaving students in the state without recognised qualifications across childcare, construction, aged care, and disability services
“Cash for Qualifications” Scams Exist
Some RTOs have issued certificates with no classes or assessments. Others lure students through fake job ads or door knocking, offering perks like laptops or gift cards to sign up.
Students Left With Massive Debt
NSW Fair Trading and Training Services NSW have both issued consumer alerts about students left owing thousands of dollars through VET FEE-HELP or VET Student Loan schemes where little or no real training was delivered.
Even Big Providers Aren’t Immune
ASQA’s public register shows compliance and enforcement actions against a range of providers delivering courses in NSW. A reminder that provider size alone isn’t a guarantee of quality. Check the current register before enrolling.

Where VET Doesn’t Work as Well
VET Doesn’t Cover All Careers
Vocational training won’t lead to roles like lawyer, doctor, engineer, or secondary teacher. These paths require university degrees and registration with bodies such as the Medical Board of Australia or Legal Admissions Board.
Limited Recognition Overseas
Some VET qualifications don’t transfer easily. A Cert IV may work well in Australia, but countries like the UK or Canada often require extra assessment before recognising it.
Quality Can Vary Across Providers
Not all VET courses deliver the same standard. A 2024 survey by the NSW Teachers Federation found a majority of NSW TAFE teachers are considering leaving the profession, citing workload and pay. Fewer experienced trainers can directly impact how well students learn.
The Career Changer Calculation
If you’re 35, working in retail, and want to move into IT support, a Diploma of Information Technology (ICT50220) gives you a structured pathway into a field where practical skills matter more than pedigree. It takes roughly 12 to 18 months, and entry-level IT support salaries in NSW sit around $55,000 to $65,000 according to SEEK’s 2024 salary data for the Sydney/NSW market.
VET’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is widely underused by career changers. If you have five years of project coordination experience, you may be eligible for credit toward a Diploma of Project Management without completing every unit from scratch.

Ask the RTO directly and in writing “What credit can I receive based on my work history?” Get the answer documented before you sign up. Some providers won’t volunteer this information because full enrolments make them more money. Ask anyway, and get the answer in writing. |
Before You Enrol, Ask These Three Questions
- First do current job ads for your target role actually ask for the qualification you’re considering? Pull up SEEK right now and look. If employers want a Cert III and you’re being sold a Cert IV, find out exactly why.
- Second is the RTO ASQA-registered, and what does their audit history show? If they can’t give you their RTO number immediately, that alone tells you something.
- Third, have you spoken to someone working in that industry about what they actually think of the qualification? A 20-minute conversation with a working electrician or a childcare director is worth more than any brochure.
VET can accelerate a career, change one entirely, or formalise skills you’ve spent years building informally. But the decision is only as good as the information you’re making it with and now you’ve got the real picture.
